I will admit, it took me a long to figure out that I am an obsessive person. Maybe I knew it but was in denial? When I get my mind set on something, it consumes me. Whether it is finding the right pair of shoes for an event, looking for a house, planning a trip, a new diet or a hobby. When I am interested in something, I am ALL IN. I am also a completion nut so things that might take someone a weekend to complete, I will have it done in a day. College is typically done in 4 years, I finished my first degree in three. So not only am I motivated by learning and accomplishing something new, I also get off on mastering/completing and then it’s on to the next thing! I am truly happy when I have too many things on my plate. Any down or idle time makes me stress out! For the most part, I do not think this is a bad thing, until life catches up with me after six months and I crash.
Right now I am coming out of crash mode. At the end of last year and the beginning of this year I was full into my new hobby of tennis and playing 4 times a week. I was also getting up at 4:30 a.m. three days a week for the gym. I was putting in long hours at work and dealing with a stupid health scare (I am fine). Mid-February I just hit a wall. I didn’t play tennis for two whole weeks and stopped going to the gym completely for a month. I started staying up later at night, sleeping longer in the mornings and eating bad. Thankfully I started crawling out of my hole about three weeks ago and I am back in busy/fun mode. I decided that tennis only needed to be 3-4 times a week so if I had a social conflict, it was “ok” to miss tennis. I have also added on the challenge of climbing Kilimanjaro at the end of May so I have been training on my mountain climber machine at home and doing weekly outdoor hikes. I found my way back to the gym, which went something like this:
Me: Hey Brock, are you still coaching at Squad Fitness?
Brock: Yeah! Are you… still a member?
And then of course, I added a puppy into the mix and well, I am back into full speed mode with life. I have to say, of all the things I have going on right now, Sully and tennis are my favorites. I have enjoyed having a dog again (despite the rants you may have seen on Snapchat!), it has gotten me outside more, socializing with the neighbors, etc. Tennis has been a great thing for me. I have really gotten into singles. I enjoy this way more than doubles mainly because it’s better exercise and feeds my competitive lust. I also have really enjoyed tracking my progress and I am hoping to move up to the next level by the end of the year (fingers crossed!).
I am super excited about the season changing and the weather getting warmer. I am looking forward to some weekend trips to the Gulf this summer, improving my golf game, I have mapped out the music concerts and tennis tournaments that I want to attend. I am probably going to add paddle boarding to my list activities this summer and who knows what else?! [Mom, this is why I need a house with a garage!] There is a lot of this state that is still very new to me so I am excited to see what all Alabama has to offer!
So… am I the only that is hobby obsessed? What hobbies do you love? Asking for a friend… 😉
